WK 3: Earthquakes
Japan is one of the most earthquake-prone countries in the world because it lies at the meeting point of four tectonic plates: the Pacific, Philippine Sea, North American, and Eurasian plates. This position makes earthquakes frequent and sometimes very powerful. To live with this constant threat, Japan has developed some of the most advanced earthquake preparedness systems in the world.
One of the main strategies has been strict building regulations. Since 1981, all new construction must meet updated seismic standards, and many high-rise buildings now use base isolation or special dampers that allow them to move safely with the shaking. Schools, hospitals, and other important structures have also been reinforced to protect people during a major quake.
Technology also plays a big role. The Earthquake Early Warning system sends alerts to phones, TV, and radio, often giving people a few seconds to take cover before the strongest shaking hits. It even slows down bullet trains automatically. Another system, J-Alert, broadcasts messages through loudspeakers and sirens across cities and towns.
Public awareness is equally important. Every year on September 1st, millions of Japanese citizens join in Disaster Prevention Day, practicing evacuation drills at schools, workplaces, and community centers. Coastal towns also mark tsunami routes and build tall evacuation towers.
By combining engineering, early warnings, and community preparedness, Japan has created one of the best systems in the world to reduce the impact of earthquakes and tsunamis.
I enjoyed reading this, thank you for sharing! Have you ever experienced any earthquakes before?
ReplyDeleteHi Samantha, your blog post is very interesting. It sounds like Japan is similar to Turkey in being situated on multiple converging tectonic plates. The Anatolian plate of that encompasses most of Turkey borders the Eurasian, Arabian, African, and Aegean plates. They also have need of protection from earthquake activity, though only one third of the buildings have modern seismic protection.
ReplyDeleteThats interesting for Japan’s warning system also slows down bullet trains!
ReplyDeleteHey Samantha, it so interesting to see how both of our countries, Japan and South Korea are both in the Asia continent but yet their seismic levels are so contrast, there in the same tectonic plates area but have different earthquake results.
ReplyDeleteThis is very interesting information. Can you also add your links/references?
